There’s something about autumn that slows everything down, the way light softens, the air cools, and every color seems to whisper, pause here a little longer. This one took us from the mountains of northern Italy to the lakes of Garda and the peaceful valleys of Switzerland, following the rhythm of fall and our own sense of curiosity.
This trip from Italy to Switzerland family road trip itinerary was just that a slow unfolding of landscapes and moments. From the misty mountains of the Dolomites to the golden shores of Lake Garda and the quiet valleys of Switzerland, we followed the rhythm of fall and found a kind of peace that only travel (and family) can bring.
Stop 1: Brixen & Cornale di Sotto: Breathing in the Dolomites
Our journey began in Brixen (Bressanone), tucked among the peaks of the Dolomites. After hours on the road, we finally arrived at our Airbnb in Cornale di Sotto (we highly recommend!), surrounded by golden hillsides and fresh alpine air. It was one of those stays that instantly makes you slow down, a cozy terrace, mountain views, and that crisp autumn feeling you can’t quite describe.
We spent our first few days exploring and unwinding.
Family highlights:
-
Riding the rodelbaan (alpine coaster) – endless laughter and breathtaking views.
-
Visiting the Nature Museum of South Tyrol – small, interactive, and perfect for kids.
-
Taking day trips around the Dolomites – each one revealing another lake, peak, or village more beautiful than the last.
Evenings were simple and perfect: local cheese, warm tea, and mountain silence.
A Day in Bolzano & The Ritten Train Ride
One of our favorite days started in Bolzano, where Italian and Austrian cultures blend beautifully. We wandered through markets filled with apples and cheeses, grabbed coffee at a sunny square, and then took the Ritten cable car up into the mountains.
From there, we hopped on the Ritten narrow-gauge train, a short and scenic ride between tiny villages with sweeping views of the Dolomites. We stopped to see the Earth Pyramids, strange and beautiful natural towers that looked even more magical surrounded by autumn leaves.
It was an easy, memorable day, full of color, curiosity, and calm.
Stop 2: Lake Garda: Sunshine & Family Time
After the mountains, we headed south to Lake Garda, stopping at the Natural History Museum in Trento on the way. It’s a great halfway stop for families, interactive, modern, and full of surprises.
Our family resort hotel in Garda (Le Torri Del Garda) was the perfect change of pace and a pool, playground, and time to just relax.
Highlights:
-
Exploring Sirmione, Malcesine, and Limone sul Garda – every town had its own charm.
-
A full day at Gardaland, Italy’s most famous amusement park – a big hit with the kids.
-
Evening walks along the lake, the sky turning pink, and everyone a little quieter, a little happier.
Autumn made Garda even more magical, still warm enough for ice cream, but peaceful and calm without the summer crowds.
Stop 3: From Italy to Switzerland: Lakes & Valleys
Leaving Italy, we made a short stop at Lake Como, one last espresso by the water before crossing into Switzerland. The drive was stunning: waterfalls, tunnels, and entire hillsides glowing gold and orange.
In Switzerland, we visited:
-
Lauterbrunnen Valley – waterfalls falling from cliffs on every side.
-
Wengen – a car-free alpine village reached by train, peaceful and timeless.
-
Toffen – a small, quiet town that gave us a glimpse of local life.
-
Bern – with its medieval streets, river views, and cozy cafés perfect for a chilly evening.
Switzerland felt calm and grounded, the perfect way to end the trip.
Stop 4: Limburg an der Lahn: The Fairytale Goodbye
On our way back to the Netherlands, we made one final stop in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany and it turned out to be the perfect ending.
A small medieval town full of half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes, and a cathedral watching over it all. We spent the evening wandering, talking about our favorite moments, and feeling that bittersweet calm that comes when a journey is coming to an end.
Reflections
This trip had everything, mountains, lakes, cozy towns, and cities, but what made it special was the autumn atmosphere that tied it all together. Every stop felt calm, colorful, and real.
From our Airbnb mornings in Brixen to the waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen, this was a trip about slowing down, laughing together, and rediscovering how good it feels to just be present.
